To disclose a favorite spa location is the New York equivalent of a national-security breach – how can one blow the cover of an oasis? -- but d’mai Urban Spa can probably withstand the attention and retain its calm. Luxe, unfussy and feng shui-ed within an inch of its 3,000-square- foot life, the spa combines the chicness of a Soho design shop with the laissez-faire warmth of a Brooklyn restaurant. The people at the desk know your name. The sauna, a cedar box of heaven, is generally about 230 degrees, the aestheticians use Sonya Dakar products, and several of the massage therapists have earned their own celebrity clientele.s item about? NEW YORK’S 50 BEST 6th Edition Places to find PEACE and QUIET

January 01, 2020

In the past decade, day spas have invaded New York. This is not a bad thing. The trick is finding the best places to go. Start with d’mai Urban Spa in Brooklyn, where the Balinese themes reinforce the feeling that you’ve arrived at a faraway escape. The dominant design feature is a 70-foot interior boardwalk of white cedar, framed on both sides by a silent stream of smooth, gray river pebbles. By this planked path, spanning the length of the spa and dotted with lounge chairs, you could rest contentedly in your robe and slippers for hours … but skilled hands await you. A good massage can drop tension like a stone and at d’mai the stress-neutralizing benefits are multiplied in settings like the Cabana room – a tented healing haven poised below a draped skylight. During my deep tissue massage, rain fell lightly, showering the room’s ceiling with a soporific pitter-patter. On the floor, visible below my face cradle, was a bowl of fragrant orchids. Later, I was handed a glass of cool spring water with cucumber slices. Details like these make d’mai truly special.

The sexy devil had us at hello. Helping us onto his massage bed, he explained that he entered the field to help ease his girlfriend’s back pain.(Forget sexy devil, the man’s a saint ). All tension melted as his hands glided over our torso and legs. He then dug into our shoulders and neck, using Swedish strokes and a muscle-lengthening therapy called myofascial release. Once he demonstrated a few breathing exercises, we found ourselves wishing our own boyfriend could learn from his example.

TIME OUT – New York

With few exceptions (Applewood, Southpaw, the park) Park Slope is not known for Manhattan-quality amenities, so I was surprised by my top- notch experience at d’mai Urban Spa. D’mai offers an impressive array of options, including facials, massages, nail services and couples care. The d’mai Ultimate – a 90-minute anti-aging regimen for the face, neck and hands—is the signature treatment. First, my technician exfoliated and extracted, then applied a green- tea peel to my face, leaving me soft, smooth and a wee bit tingly. Beyond the menu and décor, the best thing here may be the staff’s friendliness: I got none of the attitude I might have found at one of the city’s slicker spots.

We love Brooklyn. Like, duh. Chic shops, fabulous restaurants … But you gotta admit: Spa-wise, the good borough’s a bit lacking.

Not anymore. Hidden behind a tiny Park Slope storefront is d’mai Urban Spa, a huge, tranquil, gorgeous space where lush and tropical meet clean and minimal.

Picture yourself in a comfy rattan chair, feet soaking, surrounded by heaps of flowers. The only thing better would be actually flying to Bali – which, incidentally, is what inspired the owners to create d’mai.

On the menu: three body treatments (Polish, Purify and Tone), every waxing service you could ever need, facials(with Sonya Dakar Custom Green Tea Acid Peel options),and traditional and hot stone massages (available in the cabana for couples as well as private).

Now that’s paradise. We have one word for you:Git!
